Engine Oil Top-Up Warning and Process in Volkswagen & Skoda Cars

Volkswagen and Skoda recommend an engine oil replacement interval of up to 15,000 km or as specified in the vehicle's service schedule. However, turbocharged engines can consume some engine oil during normal operation, and the oil level may drop between scheduled services.

After an oil change, or when you purchase a new car, it is a good practice to keep an eye on the engine oil level, particularly after the car has covered several thousand kilometres.

In some vehicles, the oil level may drop enough after around 7,000 km or more to trigger an engine oil top-up warning. This does not necessarily mean there is an engine problem. Oil consumption can vary depending on the engine, driving style, running conditions and individual vehicle.

What should you do when the oil top-up warning appears?

If your Volkswagen or Skoda displays an engine oil top-up warning, check the oil level and top it up with the correct engine oil specification recommended for your particular engine.

For the applicable engines covered here, the commonly specified oil grade is 0W-20.

You can purchase a 1-litre bottle of the correct engine oil and keep it in your car for topping up when required. A genuine 1-litre bottle can cost around ₹600, although prices can vary depending on the brand, specification and seller.

The top-up can be done yourself by adding the required quantity through the engine oil filler cap. Do not pour the entire bottle at once. Add a small amount, allow the oil to settle, and check the oil level again to avoid overfilling.

Alternatively, you can visit an authorised Volkswagen or Skoda service centre and have the oil level checked and topped up by them.

Does an oil top-up mean the engine oil needs to be replaced?

No.

An oil top-up and an oil change are two different things.

If the engine oil level has dropped between scheduled services, adding the required amount of the correct oil restores the oil level. It does not mean that the complete engine oil needs to be replaced immediately.

The complete oil change should still be carried out according to the manufacturer's recommended service interval.

Important

Always use the correct oil specification for your specific engine, rather than choosing oil based only on the 0W-20 viscosity grade. Volkswagen and Skoda engines can have different oil specifications depending on the engine and model.

If the vehicle is repeatedly requiring large amounts of oil between services, or the oil level drops very quickly, it should be inspected by an authorised service centre or qualified technician to rule out leaks or excessive oil consumption.

Keeping a 1-litre bottle of the correct engine oil in the car can therefore be useful, especially if you frequently travel long distances.
